The New Carp

A lot of us in the Chippewa Valley remember the radio station 99.9 The Carp, a “new rock” radio station that was unceremoniously taken off the air a few years ago and replaced with a “variety” radio station with an auto-DJ called BOB-FM. Now, faced with an ever-declining presence of rock on Top 40 radio and our sole “new rock” station gone, those of us in the Chippewa Valley who still yearn for new rock & roll are in much need of a vehicle for promoting new rock songs. Enter The New Carp! The New Carp is named as such in homage to 99.9 The Carp. I have fond memories of discovering some of my favorite bands on The Carp, and The Carp served as my gateway into the world of rebelliousness and abandon that is rock & roll, and I’m sure many others feel the same. The New Carp will have some slight differences in format to the original Carp. Rather than focusing exclusively on hard rock, The New Carp will explore songs from all the various subgenres of rock, whether they be hard rock, soft rock, metal, southern rock, folk rock, dance rock, or what have you. New episodes will appear weekly, each roughly two hours long. Music will be from the year 2000 and newer, with the exception of some classic songs occasionally added to provide an “old vs. new” contrast (two such contrasts appear in this first episode) or when a classic artist is in the news. Each episode will be all music and no talk. Requests will be accepted either in the comments section or via twitter #thenewcarp. The only guidelines for requests is that they be rock songs (of any subgenre) from the year 2000 or newer, and they need to be for sale somewhere (no bootlegs). It doesn’t matter if they are singles or album tracks, national or local, major or indie. Each week I will also feature the entire playlist on the blog with a track-by-track commentary.
