Gallery director Sarah Wiseman visits the studios of artists she works with, lifting the lid on artistic processes, techniques, and what life is really like as a professional artist. Gallery director Sarah Wiseman visits the painter Sarah Spackman at her studio, in the weeks leading up to her solo exhibition ‘Drawing in Colour,’ launching on 11th September 2021. Listen in as the two Sarahs discuss their lengthy working relationship, Sarah Spackman’s early career and art school experience, her daily routine as a professional artist and the meditative power of still-life painting. Sarah Spackman’s strength of drawing and the delicate and subtle use of colour are two of the main qualities recognised in her work. She applies the guiding principle that good drawing is the basis of good painting and that colour should be used to enhance the organisation and definition of observed space and form. Best known for her still life, Sarah works in a quiet, considered way, inspired by small, cleanly shaped objects, such as eggs, jugs or simple gatherings of flowers. Recorded in Oxford, August 2021.
