Welcome to the Party Pal is the mind-bending film and television podcast you didn’t know you needed. Hosted by Mitch Lucas (filmmaker) and Michael Shields (writer/editor), WTTPP is a celebration of the art of cinema and filmmaking, where movies and television shows are meticulously dissected and analyzed to evaluate their grandeur (or, conversely when necessary, lament their shortcomings). Guests will include the filmmakers and industry insiders that craft the works of art that inhabit the current zeitgeist. All spoilers, all the time…listeners be warned!
Welcome To The Party Pal delves into Yasuke, the Japanese-American original anime series loosely based on the historical figure of the same name, an African warrior who served under Japanese daimyo Oda Nobunaga during the Sengoku period of samurai conflict in 16th century Japan. Created by LeSean Thomas and animated by Japanese animation studio MAPPA, the series stars Lakeith Stanfield as the titular character. In this episode, host Michael Shields, with the help of author and film & television enthusiast Douglas Grant, tout LeSean Thomas and Lakeith Stanfield’s talents, explore the real life history of the the famed samurai Yasuke, laud the captivating score crafted by musician Flying Lotus, discuss the distinctive humor present in the series, and much, much more.
